Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)
At St Hubert's, we are committed to fostering the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of every pupil. We believe that these areas are essential for creating well-rounded, thoughtful, and responsible individuals. The Citizenship Foundation defines these areas as follows:
- Spiritual: Encouraging pupils to explore beliefs, respect values, discover themselves and the world around them, and engage in imagination, creativity, and reflection.
- Moral: Helping pupils to recognise right and wrong, understand consequences, explore moral and ethical issues, and form reasoned opinions.
- Social: Developing social skills, the ability to work collaboratively, resolve conflicts, and understand how communities function.
- Cultural: Promoting an appreciation of cultural influences, participation in cultural experiences, and respect for diversity.
How We Promote SMSC
SMSC development is woven into all aspects of school life. While Religious Education lessons and assemblies are clear opportunities for this, we ensure that SMSC is nurtured throughout the curriculum and beyond. Examples include:
- English: Pupils read books from various cultures and settings, broadening their understanding of the world.
- Maths: Learning about shape and symmetry using ideas gained from Islamic art.
- Science: Exploring values and morals, such as during discussions on evolution.
- PSHE: Weekly sessions that promote social and emotional learning.
- Extra-curricular activities: Offering a range of clubs and experiences to further develop pupils' personal growth.
- Themed weeks or special days: Focused on cultural appreciation, social responsibility, and more.
Our Approach to SMSC
SMSC is embedded throughout our curriculum and ethos. It is reflected in our everyday interactions, school policies, and the overall atmosphere of our school community. We strive to ensure that SMSC development is a continuous part of our pupils' learning journey.
