Welcome to Owls Class
Hello and welcome to Owl Class (Reception/Year 1),
On this page, you can find all the information you may wish to know about life in our class.
At St Hubert's, we adhere to our Catholic ethos, vision and values thoroughly. We believe that our mission statement underpins life at school, as we 'Believe to Achieve: Love God, Love Learning and Love One Another'. Throughout EYFS, we follow seven core values:
- Faithful
- Forgiving
- Respect
- Safe
- Determination
- Friendship
- Excellence
How we Learn
We understand that every child is unique, which we cater for by providing learning experiences that are inclusive of all children. We provide a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities by fostering and valuing each child's curiosity; which encourages engagement and active learning. We take pride in our indoor and outdoor classrooms by providing a range of practical experiences. On a daily basis, we provide regular Phonics, Literacy, Mathematics, Prayer and Litrugy, and Reading sessions. Other areas of the curriculum are mapped out throughout the week, which you can find on our class timetable. We use continuous provision in our class to help secure and embed children's learning. Continuous provision is where the children are challenged through play and fun activities, making it an easy transition for your child. Our main goal is for our class to enjoy school and have fun while learning!
Our Topics: Cycle A 25-26
Autumn 1: The Wonderful World of Julia Donaldson
Autumn 2: Let's Celebrate
Spring 1: Supertato
Spring 2: The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Summer 1: Dinosaurs
Summer 2: At the Seaside
How Can Parents Support Learning?
We greatly appreciate the role in supporting your child to become an independent learner.
You can support your child at home by:
- Reading fiction and non-fiction books with your child and discussing the main story settings, events, illustrations and characters.
- Recognising different shapes and numbers in the world around us, for example; a square window, door numbers.
- Providing opportunities for children to count groups of objects and compare quantities.
- Encouraging independent reading of signs and words, by sounding them out and blending them, for example; c-a-t...cat, t-r-ay, tray.
- Providing opportunities to be independent e.g. getting dressed independently, going to the toilet, zipping up their jacket etc.
There is plenty of support provided to parents who are with us at St Hubert's. Throughout the year, there are Parent Workshops that our families can attend, to learn about the Curriculum and specific areas of learning. We also actively encourage parental involvement through class assemblies, book looks, visits, and whole school events, e.g. Talent Show, Sports Day, Art Gallery, Parents Evening.
I look forward to seeing you blossom this year!

Phonics Screening
In June 2025, the children will take part in a phonic screening test. The phonics screening check is a quick and easy test of your child’s phonics knowledge. It helps schools confirm whether students have made the expected progress.
Children who do not meet the expected standard will repeat this in Year 2.
Here is some information regarding the Phonics Screening test.
Early Learning Goals:
The EYFS Profile is a statutory assessment of children’s development at the end of the academic year in which children turn 5, usually reception year. Each child’s level of development is assessed against 17 early learning goals (ELGs) across all 7 areas of learning in the EYFS.
The Profile is intended to provide a reliable and accurate summative assessment of each child’s development at the end of the EYFS in order to support children’s successful transitions to year 1.
